Exhibition label text: Telephone, 1960’s. Plastic is used to make
many different products such as telephones. This kind of plastic is
derived from coal tar.Portable rescue telephone, c. 1950.
Used in an emergency to establish communications between the
mine telephone system and first aid base. It could be used for
speaking or signalling using a set code of rings.
One ring meant ‘help wanted’, two rings meant ‘repeat message’
and so on. This system meant that messages could be passed on
by rescuers wearing breathing apparatus.
