Circular copper alloy base, cylinder of metal gauze with a cylinder of glass around it; 3 metal rods attaching base to top painted black; bonnet also painted black.

Exhibition label Text: ‘Jack’ Davy lamp, c. 1860.

The ‘Jack’ Davy shows teh earliest improvement made to the DAvy lamp. A cylinder of glass was placed around the gauze to prtect the flame and prevent it being pushed against the gauze by a breeze. This stopped the gauze becoming too hot, and possibly causing an explosion. It would not originally have been painted.
